By law, the Attorney General is responsible for providing all legal services to the Commonwealth and its agencies, unless this is impossible or uneconomic. This is often because the work is highly specialized or would require a lot of travel on the part of lawyers. Shortly after the inauguration, Attorney General Miyares identified outside counsel as an area requiring more oversight and structure, which is why the office implemented a formal policy for hiring, managing, and overseeing outside counsel. It requires a documented needs assessment, competitive procurement policies and objective assessment, and prohibits policy contributions to the Attorney General from companies seeking external advice while bids are open. More recently, from 2019 to 2021, Ferguson was chief adviser to U.S. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell. He assisted McConnell as chief legal counsel and legal confirmation strategist, including the confirmation of Justice Amy Coney Barrett. Previously, Ferguson was senior special advisor to then-Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley upon confirmation of Justice Kavanaugh and senior advisor on appointments and constitution to then-Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham. On January 3, Virginia`s elected Attorney General, Jason Miyares, announced key members of his leadership team, including the first deputy, attorney general, deputy attorneys general and other senior executives. A spokeswoman for Miyares said at the time that the firing had nothing to do with Heachy`s work for the panel on Jan. 6. “The attorney general wants the university prosecutor to again give legal advice based on the law and not on the philosophy of a university,” spokeswoman Victoria LaCivita said in January. But Democrats viewed the firing as unwarranted interference in U-Va`s leadership team. The Advisor to the Governor oversees and directs legal issues within the Governor`s Office.
Leslie is a Richmond lawyer and a former member of Chesterfield`s supervisory board. She has practiced law in Virginia for more than two decades and brings a unique combination of legal and business skills from her years of experience in private practice following her service as Senior Assistant Ethics Advisor at the Virginia State Bar and her management and business development work at Philip Morris, in the United States. Leslie`s previous practice was advising lawyers and law firms across the state and country on the application and impact of ethical dilemmas and risk management issues. In addition, she advised on the management of law firm practice, including policies and procedures, and acted as an expert on the Code of Ethics. During her 14-year tenure at the Virginia State Bar, Ms. Haley provided ethics advice to members of the bar, answered hundreds of ethics calls each year, wrote written ethics advisory opinions, and wrote and spoke on ethical issues related to lawyers and law firms. She writes and has given more than 200 CLE seminars for her colleagues and collaborators. In addition, Ms. Haley has worked extensively with the Office of the Executive Secretary of the Virginia Supreme Court, Court Improvement Program, to develop and deliver educational workshops specifically focused on the juvenile justice system to provide “best practices” to assist lawyers and judges in the important work they do with children and families. Leslie has also served on the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors representing the Midlothian District and in 2010 received the Virginia Influential Women Award.
The five Crown agencies of the Administrative Secretariat manage Commonwealth buildings and grounds, administer staff policies and benefits, supervise elections, protect human rights, strive to improve relations between State government managers and staff, channel State funds to constitutional officials, and oversee Commonwealth information technology. She became Chief Deputy Commonwealth Prosecutor in the Loudoun County Commonwealth Prosecutor`s Office in 2012, having previously headed the Child Abuse and Sexual Crimes Division, first as Head of the Victims and Witnesses Office and then as Deputy Commonwealth Prosecutor. With 20 years of legal experience, Ms. Johnson brings a wide range of legal and business acumen to Aspen. She comes from Schneider Electric North America, a global leader in the digital transformation of energy management and industrial automation, where she served as General Counsel. Before joining Schneider, Ms. Schneider. Johnson has held various positions of increasing responsibility in the legal department of Global Atlantic Financial Group (F/K/A Goldman Sachs Reinsurance Group), most recently as Senior Vice President, Head of Corporate General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel and Secretary (2013 to 2021). As Head of Corporate Legal at Global Atlantic, she was responsible for enterprise-wide commercial contracts and licensing. corporate governance and regulatory compliance; M&A, transactional work and business integration; intellectual property; legal oversight of cybersecurity, incident response, privacy and third-party risks; Process; and labour law, staff support and executive compensation. The Attorney General`s Office consists of a Deputy Attorney General, four Deputy Attorneys General who oversee 21 specialized sections of the Act, and other staff, including Deputy Attorneys General, additional prosecutors appointed as advisors to specific agencies or universities, legal assistants, legal secretaries and other professional support staff.

Jordan was Senior Vice President at Pinkston, a strategy and communications consulting firm based in Falls Church. Prior to Pinkston, D.J. worked for ten years in the U.S. Congress in various offices, including Senator James Lankford`s office and the House Committee on Small Business. D.J.
began his career in broadcast journalism and has worked for several national media outlets such as CNN and Fox News. D.J. holds a bachelor`s degree in communications from Liberty University and a master`s degree in public management from Johns Hopkins University. In 2017, D.J. completed a four-year service with the Virginia State Board of Social Services. He currently serves on the board of directors of Virginia`s Kids Belong, a non-profit organization that helps children in the Commonwealth. D.J. was also a member of the 20/20 Bipartisan Justice Center, which advocates for local communities and enables them to find innovative solutions to problems in the criminal justice system. D.J. was born and raised in Hampton Roads and now lives with his family in Prince William County.
Stewart is a graduate of Duke University and the University of Virginia School of Law, where she served as editor-in-chief of the Virginia Tax Review and editor-in-chief of Virginia Law Weekly. After law school, Stewart worked at the U.S. Federal Claims Court in Washington, D.C. for Judge James T. Turner. Hamlett previously held various positions in the Virginia Attorney General`s Office, including that of opinion leader. In addition, Hamlett served as Senior Assistant Attorney General at the Ministry of Education from 2012 to 2014. Hamlett also served as an advisor to government agencies from 2002 to early 2010, including the Virginia Retirement System, Virginia Port Authority, Virginia College Savings Plan, Virginia Public School Authority, Virginia Public Building Authority, and Virginia Economic Development Authority. These members are sworn in on January 15 and then head the five legal divisions of the Virginia Attorney General`s Office: the Solicitor General`s Division, the Government Operations and Transactions Division, the Health, Education and Social Services Division, the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Division, and the Civil Litigation Division. The office also includes an executive and administrative department. Nicole Wittmann is a former Loudoun County District Attorney. Wittmann joined the Loudoun County District Attorney`s Office in 2005.
Previously, she worked in the Arlington County District Attorney`s Office and the Sarasota District Attorney`s Office in Florida. Previously, Hamlett served as legal counsel to the Virginia General Assembly for the House Finance Committee and the House Appropriations Committee.
