The Consumer Protection Clinic has a Housing Legal Advice Hotline at 210-570-6135 that provides free legal information, advice and recommendations to people at risk of eviction or foreclosure. The Consumer Protection practice focuses on economic fairness for low-income landlords and renters. Student attorneys protect clients from abusive and unfair selling practices, including fraudulent home sales and foreclosures in state and federal courts. Student lawyers also represent clients in transactional real estate matters to secure home equity and promote access to disaster relief and repair programs. The clinical courses are dedicated to educating St. Mary`s students and simultaneously addressing the otherwise unmet legal needs of high-income individuals in San Antonio and South Texas. Through their clinical work, St. Mary`s students provide meaningful service to the community by expanding the legal resources available to serve the people of San Antonio and South Texas. In addition to working on real cases, the Civil Justice Clinic includes a teaching component that covers substantive law and legal skills. The teaching component includes lectures, discussions, group exercises and simulations to prepare students for legal practice. Injustices in our legal system have incarcerated people of color en masse and are disproportionately introduced.

Unite the People conducts campaigns and demonstrations, liaises with political actors and provides legal advice to families who cannot afford it. Here are the different ways you can get involved with Unite the People. For their individual cases, student lawyers must commit to normal office hours and legal contacts in addition to their teaching time. Each clinic lasts one semester and six credit hours. Second semester options are sometimes available for three credits. Law students can also volunteer their time as part of the pro bono program to help disadvantaged people with legal problems. Students can do important legal work and gain a better understanding of legal processes while helping those in need through opportunities such as the Identity Recovery Project at Haven for Hope and the Volunteer Tax Assistance Program (VITA). Students who meet certain criteria can earn a pro bono and public service certificate at their graduation ceremony. The presence portion of the Immigration and Human Rights Clinic includes a practice-based examination of complex immigration law as well as exercises and simulations specifically designed to teach the basics of good legal practice. The ACL`s Legal Aid Enhancement Program (LAEP) supports improvements and innovation in legal aid in four key areas: The SeniorLAW Center works to improve access to legal defense, education, and resources for older adults in Pennsylvania who care for minor children when biological parents are unable to do so. Through this project, the SeniorLAW Centre creates innovative tools to improve admissions, trains lawyers to increase pro bono representation for grandparents raising grandchildren, engages community partners to improve access to legal aid for seniors, and conducts community building activities for seniors to learn more about their legal needs and rights. Idaho Legal Aid Services, Inc. (ILAS) has increased lawyers` capacity to handle urgent legal issues involving older adults, expanded representation through a senior counsel line and expanded representation, and established and strengthened partnerships in urban and rural areas of the state. As part of the project, ILAS developed a legal review tool and worked with other organizations to screen more older adults to identify potential legal needs, preventively identify legal issues, and facilitate direct referrals from partners. ILAS also conducted education and public relations activities at the national level. The Public Law Center (PLC) is working with the Council on Aging of Southern California to improve access to a lawyer for seniors and educate seniors in Orange County, California about their legal needs and rights, as well as the availability of support to address issues, particularly with a focus on financial abuse of older adults. They also work to provide holistic services to meet a range of legal and non-legal needs through a social worker who works with lawyers who provide legal assistance. Legal Services of Alabama, Inc. (LSA) is working with the Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program to improve and expand holistic legal services for seniors throughout the state. As part of the project, LSA develops partnerships with community service providers and conducts education and outreach activities to achieve positive results in addressing the legal needs of older adults in Alabama, with a focus on access to home and community services.

Legal Services of North Florida, in partnership with Legal Services of Greater Miami, has created a statewide replicable model for providing legal aid to older Floridians. As part of the project, they improved intake systems, training programs, outreach services and direct legal services to improve access to legal services and outcomes for older adults. They have developed innovative tools to improve services and served as a model for providing legal aid to older adults with critical needs, such as the homeless, victims of physical abuse, victims of consumer and economic exploitation, and to help older Floridians recover from natural and other disasters. including the COVID pandemic.
