After the collapse of the MG Rover Group in 2005, Chinese carmaker Nanjing Automobile acquired the Longbridge plant and the MG brand for £53 million ($97 million). [3] [4] Nanjing Automobile officially established NAC MG UK Limited as the holding company for the plant and brand on April 12, 2006. In March 2007, Nanjing Automobile introduced the first MG vehicles manufactured in China, the MG TF, MG 3 and MG 7. [4] The MG Rover Group bought Qvale, which had taken over the development of the De Tomaso Bigua. This car, renamed Qvale Mangusta and already on sale in the United States, served as the basis for the MG XPower SV, an “extreme” sports car with a V8 engine. It was unveiled in 2002 and put on sale in 2004. MG is headquartered in the UK, with production in China, Thailand (as of 2016) and India (as of 2019), but the main design took place at its headquarters in Longbridge, Birmingham. The studio is located in a newly renovated building in the heart of London on Marylebone Road. The new creative space is SAIC`s first facility specializing in advanced digital design technology and will work with the automaker`s other studios to support future product designs for brands such as MG and Roewe. Advanced London is SAIC Motor`s second design studio to be founded in Europe, following the Longbridge studio opened in 2011. The London Design Studio will focus more on advanced design research projects and the creative exploration of conceptual ideas.
London uses advanced virtual reality technology to design vehicles that allow designers to fully immerse themselves in design concepts, dramatically improving the level of detail at which ideas can be examined before turning them into more expensive physical models. Using cutting-edge features like this will allow Advanced London to explore innovative design concepts and expand design possibilities. Advanced London is led by Carl Gotham, European Director of SAIC Design Advanced. [19] Longbridge`s operations were gradually reduced. In September 2016, it was announced that production at the Longbridge plant would cease in 2016 and relocate to China, with Matthew Cheyne, head of sales and marketing at MG Motor UK, stating that “moving production overseas was a necessary business decision”. Twenty-five employees were laid off as a result of the move and additional employees were moved to other regions. This marked the end of MG production in the UK, and production was completely relocated to China, with later a factory in Thailand. MG has announced a new three-year contract extension with Triple Eight Racing for the 2016 BTCC campaign. The team`s plan was to bring in young and promising riders in order to augment their own champion during the contract period. Josh Cook, former 2014 Renault UK Clio Cup runner-up, winner of the 2015 Jack Sears BTCC Trophy (Best Rookie Award) and Ashley Sutton, who moved to the BTCC as defending champion in 2015 after being eliminated from the Renault Clio Cup, have been announced as MG`s new line-up. After a hard-fought season, the MG drivers finished 12th and 13th, with Ash winning the Jack Sears Trophy as the top rookie.
The M.G. Car Company Limited merged with Morris to form British Motor Corporation Limited (BMC), which was formed in 1952 by the merger of Morris Motors Limited and The Austin Motor Company Limited. [9] John Thornley, a long-time service manager, assumed the position of general manager and led the company through his best years until his retirement in 1969. Under BMC, some MG models were nothing more than badge versions of other brands, with the main exception of small MG sports cars. BMC merged with Jaguar Cars in September 1966, and in December the new company was renamed British Motor Holdings (BMH). BMH merged with Leyland Motor Corporation in 1968 to form British Leyland Motor Corporation (BLMC). In 2017, SAIC introduced the first all-new MG concept car in some time by unveiling the E-Motion at the Shanghai Motor Show. In June 2020, it was announced that MG would launch an electric sports car based on the E-Motion concept in 2017.
[24] Gloster, a seven-seat, full-size SUV, will complement MG as the flagship and fourth offering in India.
